Inside Lanna Asoke: A Community Rooted in Simplicity and Service
Xilian

Guided by the generous insights of Jon Jandai, we had the privilege on October 8 to visit one of the Ratchathani Asoke communities in Chiang Mai, located in San Sai District (V295+G2P).

Although we had not arranged a prior appointment, we were received with genuine warmth and openness. The members’ heartfelt welcome immediately reflected the sincerity of their way of life. A serendipitous encounter with a member who spoke English enabled meaningful dialogue, deepening our understanding of the community’s philosophy, practices, and guiding principles.

Nestled amid tranquil greenery, Lanna Asoke embodies the Asoke movement’s vision of living simply, ethically, and in harmony with nature. Members devote themselves to lives shaped by discipline and service—cultivating sufficiency, self-reliance, and mindfulness in every aspect of daily living. They grow their own organic food, prepare wholesome vegetarian meals, and live cooperatively, free from attachment to material comfort or indulgence. The serenity of the surroundings, coupled with purposeful communal service, reflects a quiet yet profound inner peace—nurtured through cooperation, mindfulness, and moral clarity.

The name “Lanna Asoke” designates this northern Thai branch of the Ratchathani Asoke community, part of the wider Santi Asoke network. Founded in the 1970s by Phra Bodhirak—formerly Mongkhon Rakphong, a well-known television entertainer who renounced worldly life to become a monk—the movement calls for a return to simplicity, ethical conduct, and self-sufficiency.

Established roughly three decades ago, Lanna Asoke is home to about 50 members, aged between four and ninety-three. Younger members live with their parents, while single members stay in gender-based dormitories within the compound. During our visit, we met mostly older adults and adolescents, along with three middle-aged members who kindly guided us through their facilities and daily routines, offering thoughtful insight into the community’s way of life.

Entirely Thai in composition, the community functions as a self-sufficient collective. Its main support arises from donations by visiting devotees who gather every Saturday for communal service and fellowship—strengthening both moral learning and social bonds.

Each Saturday, two volunteer doctors visit to provide free medical check-ups, ensuring members’ health and offering preventive care. This gesture of compassionate service beautifully complements the community’s ethos of mutual care and collective welfare.

Another source of support comes from the sale of organic vegetables through their volunteer-run shop, the Vegetarian Society of Thailand, near Chiang Rai International Airport. About ten members work there without pay, treating their service not as commerce but as a sacred offering—a mission to promote compassion, health, and environmental awareness through vegetarian living. Their labor is understood as a spiritual discipline, grounded in mindfulness, cooperation, and selfless devotion rather than material reward.

The community also operates its own radio station, broadcasting reflections, ethical lessons, and community news to both members and the public—extending their message of ethical living and self-reliance to a wider audience.

Daily life begins at 5:00 a.m. with morning meditation and group study, cultivating focus, simplicity, and service-minded awareness throughout the day.

Membership Pathway
Joining Lanna Asoke is a deliberate and reflective process:
• New applicants must be referred by an existing member, though self-nomination is possible.
• The referring member provides an evaluation of the applicant’s character and commitment.
• Prospective members must read seven community texts and visit the community at least seven times.
• They must uphold the Five Precepts, nurturing mindfulness and ethical conduct as daily practice.

Distinctive Features of Lanna Asoke

• Lifestyle: Members live simply—vegetarian, eating one meal a day, and abstaining from alcohol and indulgence. Superstition is set aside in favor of mindfulness, self-discipline, and moral cultivation.
• Community Practice: Life revolves around self-reliance, cooperative work, and equitable resource sharing.
• Social Contribution: The wider Asoke network extends this ethos through free vegetarian meals, farmers’ markets, second-hand shops, and community radio—embodying generosity (dāna) through direct, practical service.

Though the Santi Asoke movement has faced scrutiny for its independence from mainstream institutions, it remains an inspiring model of ethical living, ecological consciousness, and quiet moral strength.

Our visit was more than an observation—it was a living lesson in spiritual ecology, revealing how inner transformation naturally grows from communal care and mindful simplicity. Within its humble rhythm, we found beauty born of purpose, freedom rooted in discipline, and peace blossoming from ethical clarity.

Future Collaboration: Building a Bridge Between Lifechanyuan and Lanna Asoke

While Lifechanyuan and Lanna Asoke arise from different spiritual lineages, both share a vision of moral awakening through ecological living, collective harmony, and service beyond self-interest. This common ground opens many non-secular possibilities for collaboration.

Pilot Project: Thailand–Lifechanyuan Eco Learning Center

A joint campus that trains individuals and small groups in:
• Natural farming and permaculture
• Community design and cooperative governance
• Waste management and renewable energy
• Integrative wellness and mindful living

Format: Thai-language and international courses, hosting students, researchers, and volunteers interested in sustainable living.

Mutual Benefit: A living “legacy project” demonstrating real-world applications of Lifechanyuan ideals in Thailand’s cultural context, while strengthening Lanna Asoke’s model of community sufficiency.

Long-Term Vision: Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Communities

Lanna Asoke and Lifechanyuan can serve as founding members of a regional alliance of intentional communities—linking eco-villages across Asia to:
• Share training programs, methods, and research
• Support youth and family eco-retreat exchanges
• Host interns and visiting scholars
• Strengthen resilience against ecological and social crises

Such collaboration would allow both communities to draw moral and ecological strength from shared values—embodying compassion, simplicity, and the joy of service as guiding forces for a new era of sustainable civilization.

Conclusion

Our encounter with Lanna Asoke reminded us that true sustainability begins not with technology or policy, but with the quiet revolution of the human heart. In their disciplined simplicity and wholehearted service, we glimpsed a living testimony to what becomes possible when a community orients its life around moral clarity, self-restraint, and compassion.

As Lifechanyuan continues to explore ways of manifesting heaven on Earth, our dialogue with Lanna Asoke stands as a mirror and a bridge—showing how ancient wisdom and modern aspiration can meet in shared purpose. Together, we can cultivate not just eco-villages, but eco-conscious civilizations—places where cooperation replaces competition, where work becomes worship, and where harmony between people and planet is lived rather than preached.

Through mutual learning, cultural exchange, and practical collaboration, both communities can continue to inspire one another—strengthening the moral and ecological foundations upon which a new humanity may rise.
