水墨诗画--《菜根谭》赏析

童童

【原文】古德云 竹影扫阶尘不动 月轮穿沼水无痕 吾儒云 水流任急境常静 花落虽频意自闲 人常持此意 以应事接物 身心何等自在

【英译】There is an old saying:
The bamboo shadow cannot dust off the steps.
The sun penetrates the pond leaving no trace on the water.
Our Scholar says :
Though the stream flows swiftly by, the scene is forever still.
While the flowers are wilting rapidly, my mind is cool.
Treats things this way and how at ease I would be.

【白话】有位高僧曾说：“竹影虽在台阶上掠过，而地上尘土却纤毫不会飞扬，月影穿过池水而倒映水中，水面却不起涟漪。”有位儒家学者说：“水流得再急，水边的环境却依然宁静，花落下再多，兴致依然闲适。”人若常常抱着这种处世之道来待人接物，那么身心会是何等的自在啊！

【原文】持身如泰山九鼎凝然不动 则愆尤自少 应事若流水落花悠然而逝 则趣味常多

【英译】Hold your principles as firm as the nine Dings of Taishan,
then blame shall not fall upon you.
Treat everything as fallen petals in flowing water.
Let them disappear and you will find fun.



【原文】从静处观物动 向闲处看人忙 才得超尘脱俗的趣味
遇忙处会偷闲 处闹中能取静 便是安身立命的功夫

【英译】Watch things move when you are still.
Watch people busy toiling while you are relaxed.
Then you can realize the fun of being out of this world.
Knowing how to be at ease when busy.
Knowing how to quiet down amidst noise.
That is the discipline to keep you healthy and long-lived.



【原文】读易晓窗 丹砂研松间之露 谈经午案 宝磬宣竹下之风

【英译】Reading I-Jing under a morning window,
I grind cinnabar with the dews on pines.
Discussing the classics over a desk at mid-day,
I listen to the chime announcing a breeze under the bamboo.




【原文】鹤立鸡群 可谓超然无侣矣 然进而观于大海之鹏 则眇然自小
又进而求之九霄之凤 则巍乎莫及 所以至人常若无若虚 而盛德多不矜不伐也

【英译】A crane may seem superior among chickens,
but it will be dwarfed by the Great Peng bird over the ocean.
It is further miniaturized by the Phoenix surfing high in the unreachable space.
So a superior person always tries to be humble and empty.
The most cultivated usually refrains from being snobbish and aggressive.

【原文】仕途虽赫奕 常思林下的风味 则权且之念自轻
世途虽纷华 常思泉下的光景 则利欲之心自淡

【原文】鸿未至先援弓 兔已亡再呼矢 总非当机作用
风息时休起浪 岸到处便离船 才是了手工夫

【英译】Stretching the bow when the goose is not yet here;
Drawing the arrow when the rabbit is already dead.
Such is called inopportune timing.
Don't make wave when the wind has subsided;
Disembark as soon as the boat is ashore.
This is the proper way to act.



【原文】会心不在远 得趣不在多 盆池拳石间 便居然有万里山川之势
片言只语内 便宛然见万古圣贤之心 才是高士的眼界 达人的胸襟

【英译】Don't have to stretch your mind too far, nor too many things to keep.
A couple of rocks on a shallow dish
can assume miles of mountains and rivers.
A couple of words and statements can reveal the mind of a great saint. Knowing it shows the insights of an intellectual.




【原文】居卑而后知登高之为危 处晦而后知向明之太露
守静而后知好动之过劳 养默而后知多言之为躁

【英译】Only when humbled does one realize the danger of climbing.
Only when obscured does one know of the pain of being in the limelight.
In tranquility, you would realize the stress of exercise.
Keep your lips sealed, and you shall know how foolish verbosity is.

【白话】身居低洼处，才知道攀登高处的危险，身在阴暗处，才知道光亮会刺眼睛；心情保持宁静，才知道奔波的辛苦，心性保持沉默，才知道言语过多所带来的烦躁。

【评析】身居高位者，不从高位跌落，不会领悟居高的险恶；锋芒太露的人，不吃亏受挫，不会领悟韬光养晦的好处；四处奔波的人，不累得筋疲力尽，不会领悟悠闲自在的乐趣；口若悬河的人，不言三语四，不会领悟言多必失的道理。做人的道理虽浅显，可是知易行难，不经过亲身的历验，未必就真的能弄个明白。

【原文】林间松韵 石上泉声 静里听来 识天地自然鸣佩
草际烟光 水心云影 闲中观去 见乾坤最上文章

【英译】The music of rustling pines. The tinkling of spring water over rocks.
Everything entering your ears is part of Nature's chimes.
The haze over tall grasses. The cloud's shadow amidst water.
Watching them at leisure is like reading the best essay of the Universe.

【白话】密林中松涛阵阵，泉岩间流水淙淙，静心谛听，便能领略到天地间奏响的恢宏的交响乐章；水草丛中雾气缭绕，水中倒映云霞，若有闲趣观赏，便能读到天地间挥就的最佳妙的华章。

【评析】最初的最初，我们的耳朵生来只听得泉声、松声、雨声、山禽声、落花落叶声——这天地的清籁。最初的最初，我们的眼睛生来只见得青山绿水、碧草红霞、花容月貌——这天地的华章。曾几何时，尘世的喧嚣渐渐盖过了天地的清籁，水泥的丛林涂抹了天地的华章。松韵泉声，水心云影，似乎正被凡尘裹挟着，一步一步的远离；也似乎仍在我们天真的痴念中，守望着人类心底那最初栖息的诗意。


【原文】宁守浑噩而黜聪明 留些正气还天地 宁谢纷华而甘淡泊 遗个清名在乾坤

【英译】Be a little unwitting and stay away from astuteness,
save some righteousness for the world.
Rid of extravagance and lead a simple life,
save an untainted name in history.



【原文】琴书诗画 达士以之养性灵 而庸夫徒赏其迹象
山川云物 高人以之助学识 而俗子徒玩其光华
可见事物无定品 随人识见以为高下 故读书穷理 要以识趣为先

【英译】Music, books, poems, and paintings cultivate a scholar's mind,
whilst a common fellow only enjoys the superficiality.
Mountains, rivers, clouds, and scenery enrich an intellectual's knowledge, yet an ordinary person only appreciates the image.
Nothing defines anything. It is all subject to one's comprehension.
So, to pursue knowledge, one needs to have insights.




【原文】人解读有字书 不解读无字书 知弹有弦琴 不知弹无弦琴
以迹用不以神用 何以得琴书佳趣

【英译】People know how to read a book with words but not a book without words. People know how to play a stringed instrument, but not one without strings.
If you only know how to recognize something practical and nothing spiritual, how can you appreciate the wonders of music and books.



【原文】诗思在灞陵桥上 微吟就 林岫便已浩然 野兴在镜湖曲边 独往时 山川自相映发

【英译】Over the little BaLing Bridge where people waved farewell,
my poetic thoughts flows while watching the woods and caves.
Alone by the bend of the mirror lake, where courtiers used to retire,
My outreaching spirit is stimulated by the mountain and the river.

【白话】在灞陵桥上诗兴勃发，喃喃吟毕，青山绿林便因沾染诗意而更秀美；镜湖曲曲弯弯的湖畔边最富有野趣，当独自流连时，观山水相映，真是良辰美景。

【评析】不闭门读佛经，不开门迎嘉宾，便出门寻山寻水，觅诗情画意。出门寻山，远观是“烟中列岫青无数，雁背夕阳红欲暮”，近观是“明月松间照，清泉石上流”。出门寻水，方知湖光有三分：一分湖光映树，一分湖光映山，一分湖光映我。
